Pure Apnea Level 1 is an internationally recognised freedive course. It is held over two full days or over two evenings and a full day, which consists of classroom theory, pool session and an open water session. This course is designed to safely improve your knowledge, skills and ability in the fastest way possible.

Theory (4hrs)

  • Introduction to freediving
  • Freediving physiology
  • Breathing and relaxation techniques
  • Identifying blackouts, LMC and ascent hypoxia
  • Safety and rescues
  • Importance of the buddy system
  • Pressure and equalization
  • Freedive Equipment

Pool Session (4hrs)

  • Breathholds (static and dynamic)
  • Water rescues
  • Finning techniques and body position
  • Recovery breathing

Open Water (6hrs) Shore dive – Up to 20m

  • Equalization
  • Buoyancy
  • Duck dives
  • Free Immersion (FIM)
  • Constant weight (CWT)
  • Rescue dives

Prerequisites

  • 18 years of age or 16+ years of age with signed parental consent, a physician’s signature maybe required. 12+ may undertake the Adventure Freediver I and Surf Apnea courses.
  • Comfortable swimming and snorkelling in open water
  • In good health
  • Sign a Course Register, Indemnity Form and Medical Questionnaire

Students must have the following dive equipment:

  • Fins, preferably closed heel and long blade
  • Mask, preferably low volume
  • Snorkel
  • Wetsuit or exposure protection
  • Weight belt and weights

Gear is available for hire and purchase. (There may be an additional charge)

Pool entry fee, snacks and refreshments are included in the course cost.

We will be using Spear West for our theory session. Any gear needed can be purchased on the night.
